Music genres evolve as cultures begin to converge and interact; the audience widens and diversifies. It begins to take shape creatively; resulting in music that crosses boundaries in both content and whom it reaches. The Live Manikins are truly a example, a reflection of their diverse musical and cultural upbringings. Their second album, “Full Canvas” showcases a mosaic of their influences, ranging from the boom bap of golden-era hip hop, vibes of soul music, and lyrical tenacity of battle emcees.
Hailing from all over California, the Live Manikins consist of four emcees and one deejay, all of which now live in Sacramento. As the city’s subcultures began to undergo a renaissance in the early 2000’s, the group formed organically while crossing paths at various events. While hailing from different ethnic backgrounds, the group forged a bond, unified by the common denominators of hip hop, passion for good music, and most importantly- friendship. Events were hosted, shows were rocked, tours commenced.
The Live Manikins have collectively performed with a wide array of artists who serve as inspiration, both mainstream and progressive: Nas, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Canibus, Dead Prez, Little Brother, Swollen Members, Black Sheep, Gym Class Heroes, Living Legends, Heiroglyphics, Blu, Exile, The Beat Junkies, Zion-I, Lyrics Born, Ugly Duckling, Killa Priest (Wu-Tang), Krs-One, StrangeFruit, LifeSavahs, Mistah Fab, Mayer Hawthorne (Now On), Procussions, Moka Only, Busdriver, Pigeon John, Buff One, Pharcyde, and Brother Ali.
Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, having achieved numerous Sacramento Music Awards, full-spread interviews in local press, and numerous appearances on morning drive television. In 2008, the Live Manikins released their debut album, Still Life, which secured critical acclaim:
“Still Life by Live Manikins: A near-flawless release from one of the most charismatic hip-hop groups since Digital Underground. Runt Rock’s musical knowledge combined with DJ Rated R’s absolute precision and the smooth verbalism of emcees Flavius, Self and Linguistics, deem Live Manikins a crew of fascinating hip-hop musicians.”
Josh Fernandez, Sacramento News & Review
The Live Manikins have released their follow up album, “Full Canvas.” An ode to their trials and tribulations, this record declares growth both personally and musically; literally starting from the album’s introduction, as the group celebrates the challenges overcome to finish the project. The record is mixture of feel-good, soulful hip-hop vibes; lyrically reflective by emcees Flavius, Self, Mr. Lingo, and Runt Rock, cut and scratched by DJ Rated R. The DNA of funk soul samples is still prevalent, drums kick hard and the melodies sing- thanks to production from Runt Rock, DJ Epik & Thiago Prodigo; mastering from Andrew Lozano at Freqy Music Group.

This past Friday's show was a big deal for us. Not only did we perform for a lot of people who had never heard of the Live Manikins, but nearly our entire set consisted of brand new songs that will appear on our upcoming album—a few of which had never even been heard by anyone outside of our group before that day.
Fortunately, because of an awesome crowd, a great venue, and fantastic people with whom we shared the stage, it turned out to be an amazing night. The Royal Jelly and HANS! and the Hot Mess are both fantastic bands and we're grateful that they had the foresight to see that our groups would make for an entertaining night of eclectic music. Hopefully it won't be the last time we work together.
Huge thanks to Andrew Lozano from Freqy Music Group for making sure our music sounded extra crispy and Mike Mitchell for showing off his vocals on stage for one of our new songs. Most of all, thanks to all of you who came out, especially those who have been with us for years and the new listeners who were exposed to us for the first time.
Next up is our Nooner Show at Sac State on March 30th. If you're free that day or walking around campus, we welcome you to check out us. Until then, keep it live.

Adrian Alan After developing his sound in New York City & New Orleans, Adrian Alan is now based out of Los Angeles. His style is best defined as a concoction of rhythm, blues and funk saturated with soul. Adrian’s versatility has been in demand for both local and international touring acts such as Big Sam's Funky Nation & Panic! at the Disco. His musical influences run the gamut from Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers. Adrian’s style resonates from all of these legends with his own version of soul that is romantic and heart-poured in shameless rhyme. Adrian teamed up with producer Scotty Hard (Wutang, MMW, Boogie Down Productions) to record original songs arranged on his self-titled EP “The Adrian Hibbs Project" and is currently mixing and about to release a self titled LP under Adrian Alan. Too often, videos merely glorify violence, negativity, and ignorance in society and hip-hop life. We know there are thousands of individuals who will never get their shot to be heard, simply because they don't follow the negative trend in the media industry or think they will not be recognized for their talent. So "Speak Up"!!

Waddup ya'll One love and blessings to the fam. Self here still in the field with Live Manikins pursuing this dream. We had a lot of great shows with our 9 piece collective, gathering this many members on the same wave length has been a blessing. From having Marc (drummer) Jupiter (Keyboardist) Josh (Guitar) Andrew (Bass) DJ Rated R (Turntablist) Runt Rock (Emcee) Self (Emcee) JRockit (Emcee/singer) Flavius (Emcee) to form this group is a journey. Opening new expressions and levels of music. Hip Hop is what we all came together on yet the heavy influences from Rock, Jazz, Blues, House, etc. Well I am here dropping some gems on what we have for you coming up. We celebrated the past, word up and we all lived and floated. Now is for the cloud 9 of the future, in other words the new high.

With the expansion of our live experience by adding a full back-line (shout out Erin, Mark, Jeff and Jupiter) and our experimental shows, we have been having a blast. Bringing you our album #FullCanvas in the most visual/musical way has been our mission. Let's recap some of the events that has come to pass. #420
We were apart of a 420 show and teamed up with www.saccannmove.org to present this show along with the Arden Park Roots. This show took place at Harlows. Here is a little snippet from the Sacramento News and Review about this show: "It’s Midtown’s premier 4/20 party. There will be tunes from Sleeprockers, Live Manikins and Arden Park Roots at this Friday-night celebration at Harlow’s. Selekta Lou will be deejaying all day, and there will be art and dancing, of course. The first 100 people in the door get prizes and gifts. High holidays, indeed. It starts at 4:20 p.m. and goes all night. This is also a good place to find and sign the Committee for Safe Patient Access to Regulated Cannabis ballot-measure petition to bring medical-cannabis dispensaries back to Sacramento County. Harlow’s, 2708 J Street; 4:20 p.m.; $24 for an all-day pass, $12 for Arden Park Roots; 21 and over; www.harlows.com; www.saccannmove.org" - To summarize this show, it was a blast and here is a clip of our song Saturday complete with a horn section brought by our homie Anthony Coleman Live Manikins - Saturday#RecordStoreDay - April 21st live at Dimple Records Shout out to Van at Dimple Records on inviting us out to rock with ARG x Sleeprockers and DJ Los on record store day. We bbq'd like some real men and rocked music. Here are some flicks from the event.
#Simplistic Big Band takes Harlow's stage Sunday x Live Manikins Speaking on our friend Anthony (who brought the horns), he invited us out to do a rendition of our song "These Days" backed by a 23 piece band which was amazing. Read more here: #Simplistic#Sleeprockers x #Hieroglyphics live at CSUS
- Want to give a shoutout to Sleeprockers for inviting us out to perform our song #Diskjock off of #FullCanvas with them. It was dope and we were glad to share the stage with Heiro, Task1ne and of course the Sleeprockers!
#Capital performance. Yes you heard right. We performed at the Marijuana March that was at the Capital May 5th. This march was for better reform on marijuana regulations and we were proud to be apart of this.
#FullCanvas- We thank you for your continued support through the first quarter of 2012. We have been working hard presenting our dreams and ambitions to you and we appreciate the feedback, love, good looks, and daps along the way. #Respect and #FullCanvas
Respect and salutations to all of you. #FullCanvas is what we are rocking with and 2012 as we are getting acquainted with seems to be developing that picture. Strokes with each verse creating a sound that is an unison with our life. #FullCanvas, and yes that pound was intended so #punintended
A lot has been going on within the HQ of Live Manikins. If you haven't copped the album yet, we advise you to taste it. It is up for download through Apple iTunes and for the heads CDBaby. Allow the album to grow and build with your everyday and then, understand #FullCanvas
#PSA: First Music Video *clears throat* Now we shot out to Expressions college to film our first music video of the album. The reasoning behind choosing this song is we need a starting point to re-introduce ourselves. Vibe is raw straight from the low end, head nod cosigning that "I ain't playing the background" yet expressing that illness. (#Definition: cool, slick, phatness) Here is a little behind the scene:
Now if ya'll have not been in the know about what is going on with the man who talks with his hands DJ Rated R, his Sleeprockers crew has been #elavatin. If you have not yet peep there facebook yet it is: SleeprockersFBkickit Anyways, after you hit that spot if you didn't see the recent release it was Tajai's Mixtape titled #MachineLanguage. Ain't going to lie we have been talkin our album a lot but this mixtape #MachineLanguage is ill! (#Definition: cool, slick, phatness) peep the vid:
Thank you for staying in tune with the Live Manikins.
It has been a long road. It has been a beautiful journey, real talk. From the moment the idea of #FullCanvas came to it actually being in your ears. The concept, the art, the vision, the dream. #FullCanvas the name, came from the idea of a the world viewed from one. Once viewing this world with a blank canvas, an artist able to paint the world though ones imagination. The finish? a #FullCanvas. Flavius or as I would like to call him, a poet. aggressive intellect. Runt Rock, the one behind the production and constructs his vocal as if an instrument itself heavy flow aka SoulKid. JRockit aka Mr funkvibe swingin get up slick emcee. Self, you know the name deepness, matched to a rhythm. Mr. Lingo rapid flow lyrics is gold straight up, and the one the only turnablist trickery for the masses DJ Rated R.
Now we have just finished the album release. It was at a venue called Harlow's located in Sacramento, California. This venue we chose because of the dope sound system that is backed by a dope ass sound man, plus kitchen, #realtalk. The kitchen was for our brother in arms aka we can call him knowledge aka M.Chong launching his GetSRVD food blog. Let me take an excerpt from his spot," bridges the gap between food culture & daily lifestyle; influenced by my interest in music, art and more. Expect content that speaks to what I’m eating, how to make it, food news, and maybe even a rant or two, just for sh*ts and giggles. haha, (that was me laughing)
Shoutout and much respect to Submerge Magazine
Shout out to the sponsors for your help making this album release possible. Shoutout to the lovely Kasi Jones (kasij.com) for hosting the special night. The swagbags from those sponsors on the flyers made heads excited and kept there game right. Damn that was a fun night. Shout out to DesiIntervention for handling the photography. The pictures will be posted at www.DesiIntervention.com. The biggest part of this whole event was the fans aka we like to called them fam. We hit capacity and the night was dope because of you and we are forever grateful fam.

The World, as some would call it seems to be an eye-opeing introduction.
Stay tuned, if one were to say awaiting the next rebellious outreach.
Live Manikins - We are and to you we say waddup. We thank you for staying tune for our music for the world. The time has been too long, yet the sequel is now. A Full Canvas, which you will here in its entirety. It has been a roller coaster of a year but the feeling is true. I heard that quote from somewhere, probably some random street wonderer yelling habits. Anyways, a lot of shows and memories have happen throughout this time. Let’s run some shall we?
Joints and Jams – Sleeprockers
Rated R brought a vision of just rocking joints and jams to be point blank with you. It’s been the themes that brought the vibe. Started at Capital Garage, (which is a dope food spot with a smaller stage but shout out to Capital Garage) which allowed him to it take off from a platform. Where did it end up you say? At the Sammies aka Sacramento Music Awards 2011 with thousands of people in attendance. (Side note – DJ Rated R won best Turntablist) During the process of the Joints and Jams molding, DJ Rated R formed a group with some well-respected DJ’s to form SleepRockers. In the group SleepRockers are DJ Rated R, DJ Mr. Vibe, DJ Nocturnal, DJ Wanted (2011 DMC West Coast Champion) and Kwes the Bess. All who have a repertoire deep into this love/culture we call Hip Hop. They brought you such events as:

Hello all, Well Self and DJ Rated R team up with the Non-Prophet organization called S.W.A.G. (Students with Aspiring Gifts) to help out with a video shoot they are submitting to the Pepsi Smash contest.
Here is a little bit of background on S.W.A.G. Mission Statement: Student’s With Aspiring Gifts’ mission is to use hip-hop culture as a tool to meet the needs of students academically, creatively, and artistically. SWAG fosters a learning and academic environment that inspires students to delve in the knowledge of hip-hop culture while fulfilling their goals and aspirations in a profession that relates to the five elements of hip-hop. Our Aim: Students With Aspiring Gift seeks to implement programs geared toward influencing the Hip-Hop generation. SWAG will influence the Hip-Hop generation through classes we offer that promote the five elements of hip-hop culture (i.e. deejaying, grafatti, mcing, b-boy/girl, knowledge and culture). SWAG is the bridge to engaging the underrepresented about hip-hop culture and providing resources to them that are difficult to obtain. Our aim is to showcase students’ talents and engage them in cultural arts events that exemplify their true talents. In order for us to sustain the longevity of SWAG we believe the community’s support will be the key factor in making our students goals and aspirations a reality.
The video shoot went nice. Havoc Boutique brought out a lot of there family to help shoot the message. Chad behind the camera lens and the idea came to light. In the middle of taping we noticed someone cruising around on there segway. None other than Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes. He came by and supported what we were doing by being in attendance. DJ Rated R and Luke ScratchRocker gave him some tips on the art of the DJ, battle DJ that is.
Beautiful day for being productive and having a vision. Stayed tuned to when the video will be uploaded so you guys can vote. A vision for the youth.
